A smithy on the location from the village was 1st outlined in 1378. The element west of Schmalkalde river was recorded in 1465 as being a village. It belonged to Amt Brotterode in the lordship of Schmalkalden which was an exclave from the Landgraviate of Hesse-Kassel.
